ATHENS SAILING ACADEMY GREECE

ASA SAILING SCHOOL CLASSES

ASA Sailing classes.

Taking time to sail is difficult in these times of work and family commitments. The ASA sailing classes give you the maximum time from the days you have available in school. Each class will include an ASA course in theory and then a multiple choice exam at the end of the class. You will learn 'On hands ' from qualified instructors in your own charter yacht. The school is based on the island of Poros , so in the evening after school is out you can explore and enjoy this magical island. We plan our weekly cruises to combine recreation with training. We also plan to visit a different place every day, stopping for swimming in protected bays and beaches. Most evenings will be docked ashore, or day in anchor, around 7:00pm. We offer ASA certifications up to 106 level. We also offer combined 101/103, 103/104, 104/105 and 105/106 courses. The ASA sailing school now has online classes so that you can take the practice exams before you arrive, or you can just brig the teaching books with you and study during the week.

WE OFFER 3 MAIN CLASSES:-

YACHT CREW: ASA 101+103. The best course if you are a novice and want to learn how to sail to a good proficiency. It is also the stepping stone to acquiring your Skippers license.

SKIPPERS LICENSE ASA 104+105. The course is designed as a follow on from the YACHT CREW module. It is a week intensive sailing class for experienced sailors who have meet the ASA recommended prerequisite of 80 hrs sailing in order to apply for this level.

COASTAL LICENSE: ASA 106. The course is designed for advanced sailors who plan on going offshore and making long passages. It deals with passage making skills and advanced navigation, as well passage planning.

Frequently asked questions

A: A wide age-range, from 18-73; though many tend to fall into the 30-to-late 40s bracket. Some very experienced sailors, some who’d literally never set foot on a sailboat before, some folks come with a friend/partner; some travel solo, some people have travelled/worked all over the world, some had to get their very first passport issued to join us!

A: Yes. About 25% of our students come on their own. Generally on the smaller yachts you will have your own cabin at no surcharge. On the bigger yachts we have cabins with bunk beds so sharing is easier. It is often possible to share storage in a cabin with one person sleeping either in the saloon or the cockpit.

A: We might be out to downplay the facilities and tell you it’s like “camping on the water”—but in fact, it’s really quite civilized! In fact, many of our guests who are experienced sailors tell us they were surprised at how luxurious the boats are, compared to what they are used to sailing! So, yes there is indeed plenty of hot water, in each of the 4 showers/toilets. We also have two fridges, a stove w/oven, a great CD collection, novel library, snorkeling gear and all sorts of other toys.

A: Most nights you eat out—in Greece, the taverna is an essential part of the whole experience; it is the social hub of the community, the rendezvous central for all gossip and socialising. Unlike the more usual western experience of the “move ’em in, move ’em out” mentality, once you occupy a table, it’s yours for the evening, and into the wee small hours too, if you so desire!

In fact, the problem is not having the check slapped on the table before you’ve even put down your fork; it’s getting the waiter to come over and take your money! It’s a totally laid-back atmosphere; bills are often tallied up on (paper) tablecloths, the drinks bill is figured out according to how many bottles are on the table!

As far as budget goes. The average cost for dinner is around $30-45 USD. a person. That’s usually a real feast of appetizers we often share around, and main course too. This includes some beer/wine—although if you go for some of their more expensive imported wines, you’ll have a bigger bill. If you’re a light eater, or don’t drink, your bill will most likely come out well under $30 USD.

I came to Greece after Covid with the intention of learning how to sail, the Athens sailing school taught me alot in a week and I passed my 101+103 easily. Now I am ready to practice sailing and come back to do my Skippers license

The Athens sailing school is located on the island of Poros and is accessed by fast ferry from Piraeus. It's so much better to start out on the islands then in Athens. The school is fantastic, with great instructors... I plan to be back.

We came from Australia on the recommendation of friends. Jonathan is a great sailor and even better instructor... as we say in Oz, "there is always time for lubrication"... a great school

I am a US Naval officer and found the school through the US State Dept. The school is excellent and I highly recommend it to individuals who wish to start their sailing career. I have sent both my children to the school and Jonathan taught them extensively about sailing and navigation
