Sailing areas we use to teach.

The Greek islands are possible the best yacht cruising area in the world. It has6 different island chains, all offering different sailing conditions and a different flavors of Greece.  The school uses 2 different areas for teaching. The Saronic Gulf is were the school is based. It offers excellent sailing conditions for beginners and novices. Afternoon breezes of 10-15 knots, little to no sea way and a multide of islands and quaint villages to visit.

The  Cyclades in contrast are a much more aggressive sailing area. The island chain is much bigger encompassing over a dozen island. Winds in this chain vary but a normal days sail is in 15-20 knts of wind with wind speed around island sometimes exceeding 35 knts. Corresponding sea states make things interesting and can get as high as 2 meters. As a result this area is for advanced sailors and mile building cruises.

Mile Building sailing areas

The philosophy of mile building is to sail as many miles as possible in a 10 day period.  All this depends on weather and wind as well as sea conditions. Typically we like to start with a long passage to a distant Greek island. We will endeavor to visit islands that are off the beaten track and low tourist islands.  You will be divided into 2 watch’s, a port and starboard. Typically we will leave the morning of the second day and sail around 100-150 nautical miles, you will experience your first night time sail and making land fall at night.

After a days rest you will set off again for another island this time a day time transit of 50/60 nautical miles. The cruising area for the Mile builder’s can be from the Cyclades Island group to the Sparodes island group and even over as far as the Dodecanese and the Turkish coast.

CYCLADES SAILING AREA
SARONIC & AGROLIC GULFS

These winds provide good experience and do not usually blow for more than a few days at a time. The weather is sunny and dry from May to September. Outside these months you should expect the occasional thunderstorm and there may be some cloudy days. The area provides plenty of variety with busy harbors near to Athens and un-spoilt village quays on the Peloponnese coast. There are plenty of challenges for trainee skippers, with traffic separation schemes, sectional lights, and numerous fast boats and ferry routes to deal with.

THE CYCLADES ISLAND GROUP

This is an attractive area with famous islands like Siros, Mykonos, Paros, and the wonderful island of Serifos. The island group is suitable for experienced sailors as the wind and sea states closely resemble those that you will experience in the English channel and the Atlantic. The island groups has many spectacular sights and islands. Secluded bays and picturus harbors make this island group a challenging area to sail with high rewards and wonderful sights.
